What is IELTS ?

IELTS : International English Language Test System, is a test which is a requirement for the students who aspire to take admission in Australia, UK, New Zealand and CANADA for undergraduate, masters and PhD courses, by the universities. This test is designed to check one’s ability to speak, listen, write and read English. It evaluates how well one can combine these skills to perform well in academic tasks. It is conducted by The British council and IDP global. It also is the world’s most popular English language test. There are 3 million IELTS tests taken in each year in India only. IELTS test scores are mainly used during the immigration process and education purpose.
Test Format:
There are two versions of IELTS:
1. IELTS Academic
2. IELTS General
IELTS Academic (IELTS Academic) is taken by the students for their admissions in the above said countries.
IELTS General (IELTS General Training): is taken by individuals seeking work permit or immigration purposes.
Both the versions of have four sections- Reading, Speaking, Listening and Writing and takes about 3-hours to complete. Students can retake the IELTS test as many times as they wish if they are not satisfies form their score. It uses both human raters and automated scoring methods for evaluating a student’s performance.
Listening- Four recorded conversations and monologues and time allotted is 30 minutes.
Reading- Three long reading passage with tasks and time allotted is 60 minutes
Writing- A short 250 words essay and 150 words essay summarizing the chart or diagram and time allotted is 60 minutes
Speaking- Face to face interview and time allotted is 11-14 minutes
Usually the listening, reading and writing sections are conducted on the same day. The speaking section may be conducted on the same day or 7 days before or after the other sections.
Registration process for IELTS:
Find your nearest IELTS test location (spot the local center)
Register for your IELTS Test (Either Online (Option 1 or Option 2) or Download the form and submit at the local center).
And your IELTS Test is booked. Now start preparing for the exam
Exam fee:
The registration fee is $188 (or INR 12,100). More details on fee and dates are found here.
Score pattern:
All the four sections are scored in a scale of 1-9.
Results:
The results are posted on the IELTS website on the 13th calendar day after the test. The scores are even personally mailed to the candidates.
Validity:
The IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the year of examination.
What to bring on the test day?
Students must bring two things to the test center:
Registration Number: The registration number is given on the Registration Confirmation in the online account the day before the test.
Valid, acceptable identification (ID) document(s): It is advisable to bring at least two forms of acceptable ID each time students report to a test center.
The ID document must include:
Original document; photocopies are not acceptable
Student’s full name that matches the name they have used while registering
A recent photograph of the student
Student’s signature
